Trailer Rush: Up in the Air
*With Oscar season coming and the festival circuit in crazy full swing, Fall is the best time for movies. No contest. There’s always something good coming out, and if there’s not, there’s always news of something good: new trailers, clips, whatever. So that’s what this is all about. I’m gonna post a string of them. And since I can’t get to Toronto, or Venice, or London, I’m on the far away receiving end, not reviewing actual movies, not in the loop, just excited that there is a loop. Here are some recent favorites.
H
ere’s one I hate to say has kinda caught me by surprise.
But now the trailer’s sunk in and I’m definitely sold, realizing that I’ve gotten to a point in my life where I can confidently say that I’m at least interested in any movie Clooney’s affiliated with. Which is good news since he’s all over the Fall calendar. On top of Up in the Air, he’s also voicing the lead in Wes Anderson’s stop motion film Fantastic Mr. Fox, which comes out November 13th. And he’s starring as a psychic soldier–or “Jedi”–beside Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey in The Men Who Stare At Goats, which is also in November. Up in the Air is almost definitely the one out of the bunch to really watch out for, but it still seems pretty safe to say that, this year, Clooney pretty much owns the Autumn.
I couldn’t find a video to embed but CLICK HERE for the in-HD full theatrical trailer for Up in the Air, just debuted a few days ago. The teaser is embedded below.
I love the way it’s shot and I love the idea, that this traveling businessman–whose business is firing people he doesn’t know from companies he’s not even a part of–isn’t cold or officious but actually pretty inspirational and wise, or maybe mislead and kind of depressing. I’m not completely sure which, and that’s why the tone is working for me so much. It’s surprising and seems heartfelt but not cheesy. The kind of complicated and beautiful exploration film that asks a question both completely impossible to answer and 100% worthwhile to ask.
The film will hit theaters limited on December 4th and wide on the 25th.
Here’s the initial teaser:
And here’s a clip from The Men Who Stare At Goats. The trailer’s worth watching too, if for nothing else than to hear McGregor’s pretty terrible American accent. Probably just have to get used that that, though. Nov 6th for this one.
Check this out: Unscripted: The Complete Series - This HBO miniseries was created by Steven Soderbergh and Clooney, who also directs. It’s a reality TV/documentary-style show about struggling young real-life actors in LA. What’s cool, though, is how it’s kind of half scripted and half ad-libbed, following these actors hanging out, going to acting class, auditions, getting real parts in real shows or movies, and how you never really know for sure exactly what’s scripted and what isn’t. Really interesting stuff.
