This Ain’t No Dexter No More

So it’s right around the corner, the new season of Dexter, and I’m seriously pumped. Next to In Treatment (which is history) and True Blood (whose 2nd season is becoming more and more a casual watch with me), Dexter’s probably my favorite show out there right now…well, next to Mad Men and Hung. I’m very indecisive. But what I will say for certain is that Showtime did great things with Jimmy Smits guest starring last year, and this year they brought in John Lithgow to play the “other” killer, which to me is just brilliant. So for my money, Dexter is without a doubt “the” show to be excited about right now.

This year Dex has a family and no free time; he’s living with Rita, her kids and their new baby. And whereas in most shows adding a baby might signal the beginning of a downturn, a kind of desperation for something new, here it makes perfect sense. This isn’t the highly-controlled, loner Dexter we’ve come to know. This is the sleep-deprived version, the one that’s starting to make mistakes. And with Lithgow playing his opposite, the “Trinity Killer,” the most successful serial murderer ever, crazy amounts of awesome are bound to be in store.

Check out the trailer at the foot. I wouldn’t say it gives away any real spoilers, but it does show quite of bit of what to expect, story-wise. So if you’re anything like Frank Costanza and like to go in fresh, think about watching the shorter, spoiler-free promo, instead.

What’s so great about Dexter is how well its been able to sustain that addictive looking-forward-to-Sunday appeal for 3 seasons now, with stakes constantly changing and some top-notch writing and directing. And by the looks of the trailer, and the little we see of John Lithgow brooding around all creepy and disturbed, I don’t see that changing any time this year.

Season 4 starts September 27th at 8pm.
