Have A Laugh
Ricky Gervais is taking over the world. Aside from co-creating/starring in two award-winning sitcoms (The Office and Extras), producing the American Office, putting out the #1 downloaded podcast on the internet and starring in last year’s Ghost Town, he had his first HBO stand-up special, Out of England, just last Novemeber, which, like all the rest, got rave reviews. Why, then, does it seem like so many people still don’t know who he is? For all those non-believers, here’s yet another shot to see what all the fuss is about.
On September 25th he’ll be releasing a comedy called This Side of the Truth, which he’s co-writing and directing as well as starring in. It’s a story set in a world where no one has ever lied–until Gervais’ character, a writer, discovers it, at which point (I’m sure) all hell breaks loose.
Honestly, for me, I’d buy a ticket no matter what it was supposed to be about–Gervais really is that funny–but if you’re still iffy, just get a load of this cast. It’s got Jonah Hill from Superbad, Jason Bateman and Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), Jennifer Garner, Patrick Stewart, Tina Fey, Christopher Guest, Rob Lowe, Steven Merchant, Louis C.K., etc., etc., etc.
Everything this guy has done so far has been quality, better than just funny. He gets it, those glimpses at the human condition that can only be reached through comedy. And now with his first feature film directorial debut just a couple of months away, you have the perfect excuse to go back and catch up on (or rewatch) all of his past work. You know you want to. I mean, if he’s going to be king…
